When the Switch 2 console was announced, Nintendo announced that Switch 2 will be compatible with current Switch games, but warns that not every game will run fully on the new console.

任天堂警告:部分Switch游戏不兼容Switch 2主机

At the end of the Switch 2 trailer, Nintendo shows a message confirming that Switch 2 "can play Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as Nintendo Switch games."

It was then further clarified that this was not limited to physical game cassettes, but added: "The Nintendo Switch 2 can play physical and digital versions of the Switch games."

However, the message also mentioned that compatibility is not 100%, warning: "Some Nintendo Switch games may not run on Switch 2, or be fully compatible."

While this may be a concern for players, this warning may simply refer to games that cannot run on the Switch 2 due to hardware changes.

For example, the Labo series games on the Switch require players to insert the console and Joy-Con handle into various cardboard accessories.Since the Switch 2 and its Joy-Con handle are different in shape from previous generations, the Labo is likely not going to run on the Switch 2.

It is not clear whether the Switch 2's Joy-Con handle retains the infrared camera function on the Joy-Con on the right side of the Switch.Without these features, these infrared camera-dependent games won't run on the Switch 2 (unless the Switch 2 supports wireless connection to the Switch Joy-Con controller).

Other games that use exclusive peripherals may also be incompatible with Switch 2, depending on how they connect to the console, although these details may be announced later.

Similar restrictions have also appeared on game consoles that previously supported backward compatibility. For example, while the Xbox Series X/S can run almost all Xbox One games, it cannot support Xbox One games that require a Kinect sensor because the Series X/S does not support this peripheral.
