"Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth" director Naoki Hamagushi personally admitted in an interview with SIE that they are now developing games to target global audiences and conduct a thorough moral scrutiny rather than prioritizing Japan and creative freedom. As soon as this statement came out, foreign netizens said that the word JRPG would disappear soon and Japanese games will no longer be Japanese games.
SE's "Final Fantasy" series has developed to this day, and a large number of main works, derivative works, and even remakes of popular classic works.Final Fantasy 7 can be especially hailed as one of the most influential games of all time and has been an important part of game history, even some people’s childhood memories.
SE recently released the second part of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy - "Rebirth" for PC.However, there are more things that the team has to consider during the remake, and the most important of which is probably tailor-made for global audiences.
In a recent interview, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, talked to Sony Interactive Entertainment about the challenges the team faced during the game’s long development process—and the changes they made for global audiences.
The Final Fantasy 7: Remake trilogy also made many changes compared to the original PlayStation 1 version, so many of the instructions and dialogues were modified to adapt to the new timeline and to a certain extent.
"We are now creating with a global audience from the very beginning. In this sense, we are in a completely different era."
When asked about the question “what factors will you consider when designing games for a wide audience around the world”, Naoki Hamaguchi replied: “There are many elements involved in game development. From the storyline to every little detail that the game presents, we conduct a thorough moral review of different regions. In today’s world, it is crucial to spend time and resources to make sure our work does not become a negative source for anyone.
When the original Final Fantasy 7 was released, it was built primarily for the Japanese market, and as its popularity continued to increase, its global influence continued to expand. But today, we no longer prioritize the Japanese market, allowing the game's influence to grow naturally, but instead consider the global audience from the very beginning. In this sense, we are in a completely different era.
As Japanese creators, we naturally develop games in Japanese first and then translate them into other languages.During localization, we sometimes adjust the wording to better adapt to different cultural contexts. However, it is a delicate process – players who have deep respect and strong feelings for the original will often notice even the slightest differences between the Japanese and translated versions and will ask why some changes are made. This is a constant challenge we face in game creation.“
