Analysts publicly apologize after claiming Final Fantasy 16 sales of 3.5 million copies

An analyst who once claimed that Final Fantasy 16 had sold 3.5 million copies has apologized, insisting that the figure is just an estimate and not a confirmed sales figure.

Toyo Securities analyst Hideaki Yasuda has since revised the company's report to emphasize that the figure is from their own estimates and not from official data released by Square Enix.

"Toyo Securities analyst Hideaki Yasuda apologized for his misstatement about the sales data of Final Fantasy 16!" Genki explained on Twitter/X platform.

"The original article stated that the sales figures for Final Fantasy 16 were released by Takaji Kiryu, president of Square Enix, at the financial performance briefing, but this was based on Toyo Securities' own estimates and was a misstatement by the author."

“We apologize for this and hope to correct this error.”

Square Enix itself has always been vague about the sales of Final Fantasy 16.Within a month after Final Fantasy 16 was released in June 2023, Square Enix called its sales "extremely strong", but admitted that sales were not up to expectations a month later.

Last week, we learned that the Final Fantasy series now sold over 200 million copies worldwide, further cementing Final Fantasy’s position as one of the best-selling video game series of all time, despite its sales decline in recent years.

Square Enix announced the news on social media, and also revealed that the Final Fantasy Pixel Replica series alone has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide.
