Crystal Dynamics, the developer of Tomb Raider, has laid off 17 employees.

The studio, which was acquired by Embracer Group, said the layoffs were "not a denial of the dedication or ability of affected employees" but would help the company adjust to meet "current business needs."

"We know how painful this result can be for the affected employees, and we will provide them with resignation compensation packages and help them expand new opportunities," read a brief statement posted on LinkedIn.

“Crystal Dynamics is still committed to pushing boundaries and making great games. This change will not change our current project plans.”

It is not clear whether a specific project or department has been affected by the layoffs.

Crystal Dynamics is currently working on the next work in the Tomb Raider series, which will be produced using Unreal Engine 5 and will be released by Amazon Games.

This will be the first important work launched since the studio was acquired by the Swedish conglomerate and Embracer Group, which frequently laid off employees in 2022.

The studio also worked with The Initiative to develop the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot game.

Embracer bought Crystal Dynamics from Square Enix for $300 million, and other studios were also acquired, including Eidos Montreal Studios and Square Enix Montreal Studios.Embracer also purchased copyrights for key game series such as "Breaking Out", "Thief" and "Tomb Raider".

After completing the deal, Embracer launched a massive restructuring program that led to massive layoffs, studio closures, major divestitures and project cancellations.

This also seems to include a round of layoffs at Crystal Dynamics in 2023.
