The first generation of NS games are not natively run on Nintendo Switch 2 console

Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 consoles don't actually run the first-generation Switch games natively because the hardware of these two consoles is incompatible.

One of the first things we can be sure about the Switch successor is that it will have backward compatible features.Last November, Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa said: "At today's company management policy briefing, we announced that the Nintendo Switch's gaming software will also be available on subsequent models of the Nintendo Switch."

However, while this means that Switch 2 users can still play most of the games in the original Switch game library, this is not due to the hardware compatibility of the two consoles (it would be much more convenient if they are compatible). In fact, all this is achieved thanks to a solution Nintendo managed to adopt.

初代NS游戏并非是在任天堂Switch 2主机上原生运行

In a recent "Developer Q&A" event, Nintendo's Hiroichi Kawamoto said that the Switch 2 team has always wanted the new console to run games for the first generation of consoles, but "someone told them that it is technically difficult to achieve this."

Takuyo Toda added: "When we first started developing the Switch 2, the focus was on improving its hardware performance, that is, expanding its computing power. So compatibility was not a priority at the time."

However, this is still the functionality the team wants to ensure implementation.Ultimately, Switch 2 developers decided to meet the challenge of "using new technologies to run Switch games."

"If we try to use technologies like software simulators, we have to get the Switch 2 running at full capacity, but that means battery life is reduced, so we took a method between software simulation and hardware compatibility."

The team conducted multiple checks to ensure that the game of the first-generation Switch can run smoothly on the Switch 2, but developers also pointed out that when the Switch 2 console is released this summer, "probably not all Switch games will run perfectly."

This way of running old games explains why some games have compatibility issues, but are currently under repair.Although only one Switch game can't run on Switch 2 at all, some other games still need to use the first-generation Joy-Con controller due to specific operational controls or peripheral requirements.

"But we will continue to work hard to be able to support as many Switch games as possible," Kawamoto said.
