The Nintendo Switch 2 obviously cannot provide visual effects comparable to the PS5 and Xbox Series X levels, but Digital Foundry believes that the Switch 2 can at least bring PS4-level graphics, and even improve in some aspects.
In Digital Foundry's latest weekly podcast, DF's tech experts compared the real-time Switch 2 with the PS4 versions of "Final Fantasy 7: Remake Intergrade", "The Legacy of Hogwarts" and "Eldon Far Ring" Switch 2, which were shown in the Nintendo face-to-face meeting last week, and found some interesting highlights.
DF Discovery:
Final Fantasy 7: Remake Intergrade Switch 2 version is comparable to the PS4 version in terms of resolution and overall image quality, but the NS2 version benefits from the lighting changes introduced in the Intergrade version, which is not available on the Sony PS4, so better visuals are available in some cases.
The situation in "The Legacy of Hogwarts" is even more interesting, because the Switch 2 version has better effects than the PS4 version, with clearer images and less jagged.Although the Switch 2 version has a lower resolution (720p vs. PS4's 1080p AMD FSR 1 stretch), this suggests that the Switch 2 version may use different time upgrade solutions, with image quality performance beyond PS4.
The performance of "Eldon Far Ring" is the closest to the PS4 version, with similar resolution and slightly improved shadow drawing distance, but due to the low quality of the display screen, it is relatively limited.
These comparisons show that Switch 2 can not only achieve PS4 image quality level, but also achieve better results through modern hardware and post-optimization.For example, the previous Switch version of "Alien: Isolation" has better picture quality than other console versions because it uses TAA technology.
In addition, since the Switch 2 has a 120 Hz screen, its experience is much better than the base version of PS4 in multi-platform porting. So far, Switch 2's 40 FPS mode and HDR support have been considered some kind of "extra" mode, as the 120 Hz panel that supports HDR has not been standardized yet, but the Switch 2 screen has been standardized, meaning we'll likely see 40FPS mode and HDR support frequently in games.
Since the Switch 2 is likely to be more used in handheld mode, 120 Hz is a huge advantage, as the more advanced ported versions have a hard time reaching 60 FPS at 1080p resolution, so the experience of a 720p resolution game running at 40 FPS in handheld mode is much better than the experience running at 30 FPS.
