Xbox President Spencer: Game Pass isn't for everyone

With the popularity of the live-action adaptation of "Minecraft" movie, Xbox President Phil Spencer accepted an interview with foreign media variety shows. In the interview, Spencer said that Xbox Game Pass "is not suitable for everyone."

"I think Game Pass is a healthy choice for some people. If you only play one or two games a year, that may not be the business model that suits you, you should buy those two games directly," he said.

Variety Show: How do you view Game Pass’s continued role in the current overall Xbox business?

Spencer:

"First of all, let's look at the size of the player group. I always think that Game Pass is just an option for those who want to play games. We offer players a variety of business models, including free games, purchase games, discount games, and Game Pass is just one of them. So when evaluating Game Pass, I'm concerned about whether players' game duration continues to grow, whether new players regard it as a way to discover and build game libraries, and we are always committed to it. At present, we are growing most significantly in the PC and cloud gaming fields, which is reasonable, because console games are a mature business overall, with a stable market but limited growth space. Therefore, we are growing well on the PC side, and cloud gaming has also grown in the number of users and game duration. And console games are still a very healthy part of Game Pass. But Game Pass is not the only way for players to play games. If every GamePass subscribers choose to buy games directly, which is equally beneficial to our business.

For me, Game Pass is a rewarding option for some players, but not for everyone.If you only play one or two games a year, Game Pass may not be the best business model for you, and it would be more reasonable to buy those two games directly, which is completely understandable.But we want you to have the freedom to choose.So we always make sure every game on Game Pass is available for purchase and we are expanding the purchasing channels for those games.What I am concerned about is the overall duration of players playing our games on the Xbox platform. This number continues to grow significantly, which is also my main indicator of success.Game Pass plays a big role in it, but I don't set goals for Game Pass itself alone.It's just part of Xbox's overall strategy to attract new players."
