"Midnight South" developer: Microsoft has not forced its studio to use AI

Guillaume Provost, CEO of Compulsion Games, a developer of "Lucky Few" and "South of Midnight", revealed that Microsoft will not force its studios to use generative AI to develop games, although Microsoft is vigorously promoting the use of AI in games.

Guillaume Provost told foreign media Game Developer that Microsoft did not require first-party teams to use AI technology, and according to him, Compulsion Games will not use AI in a large amount in the future.

“I can guarantee that (using generative AI) is not mandatory, you are talking to a studio that creates products with a handmade product. In our studio’s DNA, we focus on craftsmanship and art.”

Provost added that he believes that the appropriateness of generative AI during development depends on the developer's individual developer.

"I think there are many situations. AI is very helpful in the pre-production stage, like making a storyboard and seeing if it makes sense, it speeds up what we want. But we don't use AI in actual production.

You just look at the types of games we made in the past, and I think we might not be the studio that uses the most AI, but I don't think that's going to have much impact on Microsoft.The DNA in our studio is handmade and makes them feel like they are handmade, which requires a lot of manual labor.”
