Bungie has responded publicly to allegedly plagiarizing artworks in his upcoming evacuation shooter Marathon.

During a live developer event, the Marathon series art director Joe Cross issued a public statement explaining the plagiarism incident and outlined the corrective measures Bungie is taking. He admitted that during the early pre-production stage of the game, an internal artist used multiple graphic elements from designer ANTIREAL without permission without permission or indicating the source. These elements, including icons and text, were added to the project's decal design in 2020, eventually leading to the entry of the game's Alpha beta version.

Cross apologized directly and said: "This negligence is absolutely indecisive." He stressed that Bungie is working hard to improve the internal audit process to avoid such incidents again in the future. As an immediate response, Bungie has contacted ANTIREAL and is committed to “properly handling” matters related to the artist. The studio also launched a comprehensive audit of all past works by the artist involved, including inspections of environmental decals that already exist in the game version. This continuous audit is also one of the reasons why Bungie delayed the display of some of the original planned content.

The Marathon artistic director further stated that any element found to be inappropriately sourced will be removed or recreated by an internal team. The studio is conducting what he calls a "full decal audit" to ensure the integrity of all visual materials in this upcoming evacuation shooter.

While acknowledging that there are diverse teams that contribute to the visual style of the game, Kross listed many reasonable sources of inspiration for the aesthetics of Marathon, including modernism, Swiss font design, early 21st century vector art, cyberpunk style, and the original Marathon trilogy. He also clarified that none of the external partners involved in game brands or visual designs were involved in the incident.

Cross finally expressed his personal apology to ANTIREAL, expressed his appreciation for his work, and emphasized the importance of moral cooperation.“Her work is excellent,” he said, “Obviously we share a common appreciation for a particular type of graphic design.”
