Playtonic Studio, the developer of Yucalili's Big Adventure, confirms layoffs

Playtonic, a developer of the "Yucalili Adventure" series, has confirmed that the studio has laid off employees.

In a statement released on social media, the studio said it had felt the “ripple effect” of the industry’s recent changes and therefore had to make a “heartbreaking decision: say goodbye to some of the truly talented members of the Playtonic team”.

It is not yet clear whether Playtonic's next game, Yucareli Adventure: Remake, has been affected.The game is scheduled to be released later this year.

"We have all witnessed changes in the gaming industry in recent years, leading studios to a difficult time: in order to survive, they have to make painful decisions that can affect the lives of many talented developers," the statement reads.

"This never reflects the talent or dedication of anyone, and the members who left have put a lot of effort, creativity and enthusiasm into our work. They have helped shape our studios, games and culture, and we are extremely proud of what we have achieved together."

The studio concluded: "This is not only a difficult time, but also a period of profound changes in the way of game creation and financing. The industry landscape is changing, and we must adjust accordingly."

According to LinkedIn News by Playtonic Brand Manager Anne Valkama, layoffs have affected production, art, game design, narrative design and UI/UX design teams.Other affected people have also shared relevant updates on LinkedIn in the past few weeks.

Kevin Bailis, an artist who designed Donkey Kong and Didi King Kong for the SNES platform "Donkey Kong Kingdom" series, is currently working on Playtonic."I love the gaming industry, but the past few weeks have been very sad for Playtonic because we have lost some great talent and friends due to layoffs. I am very grateful that I still have a job I love and have been lucky enough to meet and work with these lovely colleagues."

"Yucarelie Adventure", released in 2017, is regarded as the spiritual sequel to "Banjo Bear Adventure", inspired by 3D platform games from the 1990s.

In 2021, Playtonic announced the establishment of the release brand Playtonic Friends.

"Yucareli Adventure: Remake" is planned to be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms, and will include remakes, fully optimized animations and new challenges.The trailer shows up with the Nintendo logo, suggesting that the game will also be available on Switch 2.
