"Bioshock" creator: "Judas" is a very traditional game

More than a decade have passed since BioShock: Infinite’s 2014 expansion, “Burial at Sea”, ended the series – a series that has also made Irrational Games studio and director Ken Levin famous. The development process of Infinity is notoriously chaotic, and the final product evaluation is polarized. The studio also experienced cruel layoffs due to its scale expansion. It was later renamed Ghost Story Games. Its core goal is to operate at a scale far smaller than the peak of Irrational Games.

The studio's first game, Judas, does look quite familiar. In a recent conversation with Nightdive’s Lawrence Sontag, Levine said they were pursuing exactly what they were looking for. When talking about the creative philosophy of Ghost Story Games and how Judas fit into today's nearly endangered game market for single-player narrative-driven shooting games, Levin believes that players' demand for such independent and complete experiences remains.

“Judas is a very retro game,” Levine said. “You buy the game and you get the full content. There is no online component, no real-time service mode, because everything we do is to tell good stories and immerse players.”

"We are lucky. This is by no means a derogatory to developers who use real-time service models. After all, the cost of making games is high, and we are lucky to work in a company like this - they trust us enough to say, 'Well, you've been investing a long time in this project and the cost is within reasonable limits, and we won't impose those (extra profit models) on you're not going to impose those [extra profit models] on you're going to."

The latter paragraph is a necessary explanation, because Levine is indeed unusually lucky: 2K's senior management clearly thinks he is a special existence, and with a "money tree" like GTA, 2K has the ability to provide more than a decade of financial support for a relatively small studio like Ghost Story Games.Even if Judas' sales are not satisfactory, 2K is likely to directly approve their next game.

Levin added: “I understand why real-time service is coming, and it’s not anyone who wants to make a living by doing it, but I just want to have a pure experience in the game – its sole purpose is to entertain me, without any ulterior motives.”

A large part of the gaming industry "unwisely" believes that such "traditional single" experiences can no longer make enough money, but as Levin pointed out, successful examples in recent years are not uncommon: He mentioned "Bad Gate 3", "God of Heaven: Save 2" and "Light and Shadow: Expedition No. 33".

“These are very traditional single-player games,” Levine said. “They don’t have that kind of commercial design, and I think players will reward these games, especially in the 3A world – because 3A games are too expensive, people want to seek other ways to make money. But I’m grateful that we were allowed not to do that, because it allows us to design games purely for the player experience…just pursue the fun of the player.”

The recent trailer for Judah was released in January 2024, and Levine said the game will further strengthen feedback on player choices because this is the future direction of the game.As for the BioShock series that made them famous, Cloud Chamber Studios is developing a fourth work. Although Ken Levin is not involved, there are many core members of the team from Irrational Games and 2K Marin.
