Recently, Ubisoft held an AMA Q&A event on social media and confirmed to players that Assassin's Creed: Shadow will not include the popular "Discovery Tour" mode of the series.

During the AMA session, a player asked whether Assassin's Creed: Shadow will launch a "Japanese Exploration Journey" just like Assassin's Creed: Valhalla has a "Viking Age" exploration journey.In response, a developer responded: "There is currently no plan to develop a 'Viking Age' 'Japan' Exploration Journey'."

The developers explained that the team decided to integrate educational content and historical context directly into the "historical encyclopedia" in the game.This means that players can directly access various historical information about the background of Assassin's Creed: Shadow - the Warring States Period of Japan - while playing the main game, without switching to a separate exploration journey mode.

“In Assassin’s Creed Shadow, we decided to integrate the history encyclopedia directly into the main game so that all players can use it,” one developer said. “So, compared to games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, all players can get this historical information directly in the main game.”

“But back to the heart of your question, we are not currently making a 'Japan Exploration Journey' like the 'Viking Age'.”

The "Exploration Journey" mode debuted in 2017's Assassin's Creed: Origins.This mode allows players to visit the game world in a battle-free environment, while providing detailed historical background and knowledge about the characters, locations and cultures of the era on which the game is based. Later, Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Assassin's Creed Valhalla also launched their respective versions of the exploration journey.
