World of Warcraft will finally be added to the housing system in the upcoming Darkest Night expansion. For Blizzard, balancing the ease of use and depth of the system while solving the performance problems of such a huge system is a considerable "challenge".

In an interview with the Cologne Game Show in 2025, Toby Lagani, design director of World of Warcraft, explained that in the process of designing and implementing housing systems, "there are multiple dimensions that require us to be extra cautious."

“First of all, it’s a performance issue. World of Warcraft runs on countless devices with different configurations, and we have to make sure everyone has a satisfactory experience,” Lagani said. “The neighborhoods and homes are a challenge in themselves because they are very different from our previous regional designs and content types.”

“The second is purely the ease of use of players – some players as newbies may just want to get started easily, like ‘I just want to drag and drop a few pieces of furniture, which is fun’. But I think one of the wonderful things we provide for players is that it can flexibly adjust depth according to the needs of the player.”

What Lagani refers to seems to be two modes that the World of Warcraft housing system will offer: the basic mode and the advanced mode.Simply put, the basic mode provides indoor customization features like Animal Crossing or farm simulation games like Animal Crossing, including grid systems and restrictions to avoid object collisions and misalignment problems. The advanced mode focuses on player freedom, removes many restrictions and adds a large number of customization options.Blizzard provides a complete description of how both modes work here.

Although housing systems have been a common feature in World of Warcraft's concurrent competitors for decades, World of Warcraft has not yet joined this feature since its launch in 2004.Therefore, players are full of expectations for the launch of this feature, which also puts pressure on Blizzard developers.

“We only have one chance to make a good impression on everyone,” Lagani said. “It is because of only one chance that the studio has put so much effort — and time accordingly — into implementing the housing system.”

"The scale of our investment in this feature...it will be available with the Darkest Night expansion, but we will continue to support it in every big patch, future expansion -- it will be the core part of the game."
