Overwatch 2 developer Blizzard responded to allegations that “the new spray paint for this competitive hero shooting game is generated by AI” and firmly denied such claims.

The game players went to X platform, Reddit and other platforms to speak out, pointing out that in the spray paint depicting the cartoon images of "exploration", "Juno" and the new hero "Wuyang", there are obvious traces that they believe are AI generation.

A user on the X platform mentioned the problem of "Hair and Line Art" in the painting with "Exploration and Juno's back-to-back posture" as an example; another user said that there are "weird mistakes and strange details that are unlikely to happen to industry artists", such as one side of Juno's eyebrows are above the hair and the other side is below the hair.

A Blizzard spokesman said in a statement to the media: "The spray paint mentioned is created by the artist."

This is not the first time that Blizzard has received AI generation charges related to Overwatch 2.In August this year, Overwatch's official X account published a post promoting the brand's cooperation with figures and plush toy company Youtooz. Observers believe that there is AI-generated artistic content in the background image of the post.

The post was later deleted, and the Overwatch account responded to a clarification, saying that the relevant pictures were from Blizzard’s “e-commerce provider” and added that “the company requires such pictures to be created by artists, which is in line with our policies.”

In April this year, players accused Blizzard of adding AI-generated voice lines to the German localized version of the character in the linkage activity between Overwatch 2 and Gundam.A Blizzard public relations manager responded on the Blizzard forum, denied the allegation and said that "certain localized voice lines in some recent Blizzard game content are currently unavailable or have been adjusted."

The application of AI in game development is still a controversial topic: players tend to strongly oppose any possible AI-generated content, while 3A gaming companies such as Sony are continuing to try to use AI tools such as large language models. As early as 2023, it was reported that Blizzard itself had developed an AI tool called "Blizzard Diffusion" to generate concept art.
