Jaden Griffin, a 19-year-old from South Dakota, has pleaded guilty to sending a death threat to Fortnite developer Epic Games.

According to court documents verified by GameSpot, Griffin will face up to five years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and a regulatory release period of up to three years after the end of the sentence.Griffin was indicted in December 2024 on charges of information he sent to Epic Games employees between October and November of that year.Griffin said in a court filing filed on September 16, 2025 that he “when sending the information, he intended to make the information considered a threat.”

Griffin's hearing ended on September 29, and he pleaded not guilty in January, this time.

The document reads: "The court found that the defendant was capable of conducting and was able to make an informed confession; he was aware of the nature of the charge and the consequences of the confession; the confession was voluntary and informed, and supported by independent factual basis containing the basic elements of the offence. The court ordered the defendant to be found guilty of the offence."

Unfortunately, cyber death threats are quite common in the gaming world, but it is rare to see such incidents resorting to court and someone being sentenced. Many people take this bad habit as a part of the network environment for granted, so it often spreads without any punishment. You just need to look at most social media platforms and you can find anonymous accounts sending such threats everywhere. In the eyes of those who make these threats, almost everyone is an attackable target—developers, actors, and even commentators and journalists who write about the game, have to bear a lot of threats.

Epic declined to comment.
