A survey found that most U.S. gamers only buy one or two games a year.

调查发现美国每月都买新游戏的玩家只有14%

Mat Piscatella, senior director of market research company Circana, shared its "Future Trends in Electronic Games in the Third Quarter of 2025" survey data, especially the purchase frequency data of American players.

According to the survey, 18% of players in the United States purchase new games every six months, and 12% purchase them annually. The number of players who buy less than once a year reaches 33%, which means that the total number of players who buy two or less games every year accounts for 63%.

In addition, 22% of players buy a new game about once every three months, 10% buy one game every month, and only 4% buy more than one game every month. In other words, only 14% of players buy games every month.

In response to this finding, Piscatella pointed out that the 14% of players who purchase at least one game per month are actually the main force supporting the continued development of full-price games.

"These 'super core players' who are not price-sensitive really keep the non-free-to-play game market afloat," he said.

Piscatella also added that if these numbers seem surprising, it may be because most of the people who follow him belong to the 14% of high-frequency buying players, so it is easy to ignore the wider player group.

He said: "Please understand before replying that just by seeing this post, you are likely to belong to the category of 'super core gamers'. The consumption behavior of you and the group of people around you does not represent the actual situation of most players."

In a related post, Piscatella further explained the impact of so-called "super core, price-insensitive players."He pointed out that the reason why game prices are rising and deluxe versions are becoming more and more common is because those 14% of players don’t care much about price, so the entire pricing strategy is more biased towards them.

He wrote: "I've been talking about this trend for years - why are there high-end controllers, $149 collector's editions, pro consoles, and overall rising prices? Because the real spenders are those who are price-insensitive and have strong spending power, while everyone else is increasingly turning to free-to-play games."
