Square Enix has released an official video comparing the Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X and PC versions of Final Fantasy 7: Remake Intergrade.

The video shows off about a minute of live-action renderings of the game's opening sequence.

Comparison video:

Although Square Enix has not stated it clearly, the intention of this video seems to be to prove that the Switch 2, which has weaker performance than other platforms, can still keep up with other platforms in terms of visual quality.

In fact, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the differences between the four versions of the video, with the only obvious differences only being reflected in details such as the quality of the ground texture in close-ups (such as when Cloud lands on the ground at 48 seconds).

One thing to note, however, is that this video from Square Enix runs at a frame rate of 30 frames per second, which means it’s impossible to compare frame rates between versions of the game.

The PS5 version has a performance mode that allows the game to run at 60 frames per second; the PC version can also run at a higher frame rate. But Square Enix has confirmed that the Switch 2 version will "run at a stable 30 frames per second."Therefore, if this comparison video was run at 60 frames per second, the differences between the versions may be more obvious.

Frame rate aside, early experience reports show that the Switch 2 version of "Final Fantasy 7: Remake Intergrade" (which is scheduled to be released simultaneously with the Xbox Series X/S version on January 22) is an excellent porting work that still maintains rich picture details on Nintendo's handheld console.

Earlier this month, the game's director Naoki Hamaguchi said the key to making the Switch 2 version look great was not compromising on lighting effects.

“In this day and age, I think lighting is a key factor affecting picture quality and expressiveness,” Naoki Hamaguchi said in an interview.

He further pointed out that if the lighting effect is compromised for the Switch 2 ported version, it will affect the expression of the character and ultimately make the game feel "cheap". Therefore, the development team insists on using the same lighting rendering method as the PS5 version.

The development team instead focused optimization on reducing processing load in other areas of the game, such as fog and other post-processing effects. The end result is that the Switch 2 version of the game runs at 30 frames per second, and the graphics are not significantly inferior to the PS5 version.
