Sony formally responds to former Bungie director's lawsuit over improper firing and defamation

Sony Interactive Entertainment filed a 128-page legal document on February 11, formally responding to the "unjust dismissal and defamation lawsuit" filed by former Bungie creative director Christopher Barrett.The document countered Barrett's lawsuit for claiming $200 million in December, accusing him of framing the plaintiffs through a "false investigation" to circumvent his nearly $50 million employment agreement payment obligations and diverted the attention of Sony's "major commercial failure".Sony asked the court to dismiss most of Barrett's seven charges.

According to documents disclosed by Game File, Barrett was fired on March 25, 2024 for "multiple female subordinates" accusing him of "improper and disturbing written and oral communication."Sony's lawyer said the company's human resources department received multiple complaints, and the employees involved said they were "concerned about the safety of their positions when they encountered such behavior."Bloomberg reported on the internal investigation and dismissal in August last year.

The Barrett team previously called the investigation a "farce", but Bungie provided detailed chat history in court documents.Testimony from five female employees showed that Barrett had repeatedly commented on his subordinates' "sexy", made sexually suggestive remarks and peeked into details of his private life, such as:

· Ask "Victim 1" through text messages to play "Truthful Adventure" and ask "Where do you think your appearance is the most prominent and worst part?" and then add "You are hot"

Ignoring the "boundaries" drawn in writing by "Victim 1", call late at night drunk and keep FaceTime on a call for hours, then walks to the dark corridor and enters the bedroom, suggesting "I can't believe I'm lying on the bed and chatting with you", forcing the other party to hang up

· Send an Instagram private message to "Victims 2" saying "You are the Holy Grail, I hope someone deserves your attention" and add "Not flirting, I am married. · Ask "Victim 2" "Do you want to be worshipped? Why resist this?" A few days later, I sent the "Strategy Guide: What steps do you need to chase you?"

Barrett argued that the exchanges were "based on both sides' voluntary", but Sony refuted that several women explicitly requested a cessation of contact and stressed that all dialogue records showed "unilateral harassment nature."

Barrett's attorney stated to Polygon: "Sony continues to selectively disclose information out of context, rationalizing its breach of contract through one-sided charges. It is worth noting that Sony always refuses to submit a full chat record as evidence, which just reveals its lack of legal basis for dismissal. The court has not yet ruled on Sony's motion.Barrett demanded reinstatement and claimed more than $200 million in compensation, and Polygon has contacted Sony for comment.
