In a recent PCGamer interview, Doom: Dark Age game director Hugo Martin and producer Marty Stella introduced the extremely fierce gun in the trailer: it kept stuffing the skull into the wood crusher and then fired the shattered bone pieces forward.

"That gun was originally called the Bone Brokener, and then, I think during the concept development process, it became the Skull Brokener," Martin said. "It functions as you think. It's kind of like a shot mini machine gun, and you can turn it into a range mini machine gun, too."

In the arsenal of the previous Doom series, Martin compared it to the classic chainsaw gun, but in addition to its extremely impactful visuals, it also has some differences in mechanical principles. It's a close-range weapon compared to the previous machine guns in Doom, but it compensates for this by increasing the rate of fire and movement, and the rate of fire and movement continues to increase as you shoot.

"You get speed boosts, and the rate of fire will increase," Martin explains. "So it goes from that heavy, slow chainsaw gun to a weapon you can move and shoot quickly on the battlefield. So it gives you an advantage in terms of movement, but you need that advantage because it's not very long." This improvement, and the accuracy-enhancing choke modifications we haven't seen in the trailer, will be part of the gun upgrade process, similar to the weapon upgrades in Doom 2016 and Doom: Eternal.

"The basics you see in the trailer, I think it's like a lawn mower," Martin said. "It's like that when I run around with it. And you have to get close to the enemy, but when you get close to them, we've made a lot of custom tweaks to the bloody effect and the enemy's stumble movements."

Martin will use the "Skull Brokener" to compare the effect of shooting at close range to the classic scene in "RoboMen": the ED-209 robot fires wildly at an unlucky executive, causing him to twitch in the gunfire, and the blood bags and realistic bloody special effects scatter.Martin said that classic action movie scenes like this have become the guiding direction of id Software, which is constantly improving the devil dismemberment technology launched since Doom 2016.

"From Doom in 2016 to Doom: Eternal, and now, it's arguably the third generation of destruction technology. I think we have the best bloody effect in the industry," Martin said. "We've invested a lot of money in the bloody effect system. So, coupled with the enemy's stumble, the wonderful animation, the physics, the sound design, and the blood pack effects, we really created that kind of scene (in Robocop.) scene. It feels great to shoot with the Skull Brokener, because when you rush to a bunch of minnows, you can hold them in place and watch their limbs get knocked off and their bodies tremble until you release the trigger they don't fall down."
