AMD Radeon tweeted today to celebrate Radeon Day and declared that it was honored to work with PlayStation on the Project Amethyst project.AMD then made it clear that the FSR 4 looks great and was happy to work with SIE on a model for the FSR 4 amplification technology. "This is just the beginning, so stay tuned for the future."

Project Amethylst, the joint machine learning project mentioned above, was announced by Sony at the end of 2024. PS5 architect Mark Cerny explained in an interview with Wccf:

“When the PS5 Pro is about to be completed, we started talking about and developing all aspects of Amethyst. To be more precise, I think we have a pretty good momentum by the end of 2023. But you also know that it’s really going to take a long time from discussions and concepts to actually bringing hardware to market.

We hope to jointly develop new high-performance AI architectures that can be used anywhere, whether it is a PC, a host or a cloud. For games, now we (Sony) have (console) games running on TV, made by some specific developers, while AMD's games for PC run on PC monitors, made by some developers who partially overlap with the former. The two have different needs and different relationships. Therefore, our real goal is to jointly develop these network architectures and training strategies so that they can be used freely in both environments.”

It is reported that FSR 4 has made great progress compared to FSR 3, but the price is exclusive to the Radeon RX 9000 series GPU, which is similar to Nvidia's DLSS and RTX series.Although Nvidia's DLSS 4 transformer model is still the "golden benchmark" of amplification technology, FSR 4 has greatly narrowed the gap with DLSS 4, which is by no means easy given Nvidia's leading edge.Intensifying competition in this field will undoubtedly prompt Nvidia to improve further, ultimately benefiting all players.
