Rebel Wolves, a new studio formed by a large number of senior developers of former "Witcher 3", officially announced the studio's first RPG "Dawn Walker's Blood" in January this year. The studio was founded by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, one of the three game directors of The Witcher 3, whose brother Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz is the chief mission designer for The Witcher 3.Although this new developer can undoubtedly make steady progress and stick to its roots, it is ambitious to open up new worlds for RPG games with its first game, "Blood of Dawn Walker"...

《黎明行者之血》想要再次革新RPG 但会小心翼翼

Rebel Wolves creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz shared their experimental views on the RPG game genre conventions in an interview with GamesRadar+.

He said: "For years, as RPG games have emerged one after another, players have become accustomed to certain features, and they will naturally expect to see these elements when playing such games. For example, item systems and inventory panels. If an RPG game lacks these, players may wonder, 'Is this still an RPG?' So when designing RPG games, you have to think carefully about a question - 'Are these standard practices for RPGs, should we use them directly, or do we boldly innovate?' You need to carefully weigh what parts can be adjusted, or how to improve them to make more sense."

However, in many ways, RPG games have proven formulas for success, and the Rebel Wolves team remains very cautious when deviating from traditional conventions.

"If you look at different games, and the reactions of fans and players, sometimes even very minor changes can cause great controversy. They'll say 'This is not an RPG' or 'the game is ruined', even if it's not a huge change on paper. But for players, it can mean a lot, so you have to be very careful every time."

But at the end of the day, Tomaszkiewicz said the main reason the Rebel Wolves team considered making changes must make sense.

“At the same time, you always have to think, ‘What will we get if we try to change? Are we just changing to be different or to achieve a specific goal?’”
