Almost a decade ago, the Witcher 3: Wild Hunter caused a huge sensation when it came out. The reason is simple: it combines large-scale cinematic narratives with a vast, spontaneous RPG open world, making Bethesda ashamed.Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, the chief mission designer for the game, now explains that trying to make the game was a huge risk for CDPR, in part because no one else tried it at the time.

Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, chief mission designer for The Witcher 3, now the creative director of Rebel Wolves, a developer of Dawn Walker Blood, recalled the difficult task in an interview with GamesRadar+.

"I don't think many games were trying to do what we did at the time, that is, trying to combine these very broad narrative techniques that were often built more into more linear RPGs, such as corridor structure RPGs like The Witcher 2. We were trying to bring this technique to an open world."

Tomaszkiewicz recalls that “there is a risk in doing this, and there is a risk in making a long story like The Witcher 3” because the team doesn’t even know if it “complies with the open world gameplay.”

"But we took these risks and we tried our best to mitigate the risks. I think the end result is not bad. I'm pretty sure some people don't like it, they prefer the style of The Witcher 2 or some Bethesda games, and I think that's totally OK."
