SandfallInteractive, a French developer of "Light and Shadow: Expedition No. 33", said that their inspiration was not limited to the traditional JRPG masterpiece "Final Fantasy".The game is also deeply influenced by FromSoftware's heavyweight works, and even draws inspiration from card building games.

In an interview with Games Radar+ at the Games Developers Conference (GDC), producer and studio co-founder François Meurisse said that Final Fantasy 10 and "early works on PlayStation, such as the 7th, 8th, and 9th generations" are one of the most important sources of inspiration for Light and Shadow: Expedition No. 33.

“These are important games from our gaming director Guillaume Broche in childhood,” Meurisse continued."He wanted to create a feeling he imagined that might have retained if modern Final Fantasy games continued to use turn-based gameplay. “There are many other smaller sources of inspiration,” Meurisse added."For example, the design of skill use action points in combat is more inspired by card building games than magic or mana in traditional RPGs." This inspiration is also obvious in designs where special attacks work together with teammates to produce unique and powerful effects.

This is not to say that Light and Shadow: Expedition 33 is entirely borrowing from other games—especially in terms of its unique art style.“The gameplay is derived from the JRPG tradition, but from the beginning, we wanted to create our own game with our own artistic inspiration,” Meurisse said."Especially in art style, we don't want to imitate Japanese games and make that more stylized manga or anime-like picture. We want to design art the way we think. That's why we chose the Belle Époque style of the early 20th century, combining Art Deco elements with high fantasy themes. We did several iterations to try to find our own uniqueness in art, and that really helped us build our own character."
