Ray tracing performance is improved by 2.3 times!Microsoft announces details of DXR version 1.2

Microsoft has announced the next generation of DirectX ray tracing technology (DXR), namely DirectX ray tracing version 1.2.DXR 1.2 will bring two major features that aim to significantly improve performance.

Two new features of DXR 1.2 are Opacity Micromaps and Shader Execution Reordering.

The goal of opacity micromap is to significantly optimize the Alpha test geometry.Microsoft says that in path tracking games, performance improvements can be achieved up to 2.3 times.By efficiently managing opacity data, opacity micromap (OMM) can reduce shader calls, greatly improve rendering efficiency without affecting visual quality.

On the other hand, shaders perform reordering to make a significant leap in rendering performance.In some scenarios, it can make the performance of DXR up to 2 times faster than the previous version.Shader execution reordering (SER) improves GPU efficiency and reduces divergence through smart packet shader execution, resulting in higher frame rates.This result will make the ray tracing game run smoother and more immersive.

Microsoft notes that Nvidia has committed to providing driver support for its GeForce RTX series GPUs.Microsoft is also actively working with other hardware manufacturers, including AMD, Intel and Qualcomm, to ensure the technology is widely adopted.

While these features are cool, we won't see any games supporting DXR 1.2 in the near term.So, don’t expect any amazing works to appear in 2025 (or even 2026).Still, Microsoft says DXR 1.2 will pave the way for more path-tracking games on PCs.
