As FromSoftware attempts multiplayer gameplay in its two upcoming games, Elden Marshals: The Night Landing and The Vampire, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida believes both games present unique challenges for the studio.

吉田修平:《黄昏血族》是FromSoftware的独特挑战

In the recent Easy Allies podcast, Shuihei Yoshida said that since director Hidetaka Miyazaki is not usually keen on PvP gameplay, "Dutch Vampire" is particularly challenging for the studio. He also believes that given Miyazaki Hidetaka’s personal opinion on PvP, Twilight Vampire might be designed as a more friendly work for players who usually avoid PvP games.

“I think designing games for multiplayer play is a new challenge for [FromSoftware],” Yoshida said. “Mr. Miyazaki is not necessarily a big fan of PvP games, so [FromSoftware] will try to make it more suitable for players who are afraid of PvP games.”

Yoshida also mentioned that he usually performs poorly when playing shooting PvP games. Therefore, games like "Dutch Vampire" are very much looking forward to, because its design may make PvPvE gameplay easier for players who are not good at competing with other players.

“I’m not a good FPS player either, so I don’t play competitive games like this,” Yoshida said. “FromSoftware creates a game that can accommodate players like me with its design philosophy—and I’m very much looking forward to that.”

"Dutch Vampire" was announced at the Nintendo Switch 2 launch conference earlier this month. It is a turn-based PvPvE multiplayer game. Players can choose different characters according to their abilities, enter the game world to fight AI-controlled enemies, and may confront other players. Each game will support up to 8 players to participate.

Several playable characters are shown in the release trailer, each with unique skills and exclusive weapons. Some characters also have special mobility abilities, such as one character in the trailer used a jetpack. The game will include more than 12 playable characters when it starts.

Miyazaki Hidetaka had previously mentioned that each character will also help players clarify their positioning during the game.

“In online play, character positioning gives players special responsibilities and goals, which often creates unique interactions and relationships between players based on the corresponding characters,” Miyazaki explained. “This may somewhat reflect my personal interests. Although it may seem unconventional at first glance, I hope players can give it a try.”

A trademark application discovered earlier this month showed FromSoftware owns IP ownership of The Twilight Vampire. This means that unlike games like Bloodborne, the studio will have full control over the future of the game. This also helped FromSoftware avoid problems similar to the "Angel Hunter" series - its sequel is only available on the Nintendo platform, rather than reaching a wider audience through multi-platform distribution. In the future, we may see "Dutch Vampire" logged on to more platforms.

"Dutch Vampire" is currently specially developed for the Nintendo Switch 2 and is expected to be released in 2026.
