Although the studio behind Shadow Blade Zero has made it clear that the upcoming RPG game is closer to Devil May Cry 5 than Dark Souls, the studio also mentioned that the game draws inspiration from a variety of games including FromSoftware's "Soul" series.

In an interview, developer S-Game talked about how various aspects of Shadow Blade Zero were inspired by the Devil May Cry, Soul series and even Resident Evil.Among them, "Devil May Cry" is the source of inspiration for the combat system, and the "Soul" series provides reference for level design.On the other hand, Resident Evil is the inspiration for the game's narrative design and overall atmosphere.

A representative from S-Game said: "In terms of 'light soul' level design, we are definitely fans of the interconnected and compact level design before "Eldon's Ring of Round of Round of Laws" and are inspired by it." They also mentioned that director "Soulframe" Liang Qiwei studied architecture at school, "so level design is very important to us, and we want to create very rich, deep and intensive levels."

Liang Qiwei himself talked about how various inspirations of "Shadow Blade Zero" were integrated in different ways.In an interview, he described the game as more like Resident Evil, which emphasizes sword fighting.

"In the past, everyone thought we were making a 'soul-like' game," Liang Qiwei explained. "So to prove that we have completely different combat systems in core gameplay, we showed these combat demonstrations. But now people may be heading to the other extreme, thinking that this is a hack and slash game without a plot and just killing to the end, but that's not the case. It's more like Resident Evil that fights with swords."

Liang Qiwei also mentioned that in addition to the fast-paced action gameplay and character growth system, exploration will be the core part of the gameplay of "Shadow Blade Zero".He said that the game's exploration elements are borrowed from the "Soul" series, while the "Ambient" comes from "Resident Evil".

“Anything that is useful and excellent for us to create a core of ‘playable kung fu movies’ (which includes exploration and character growth) will be used,” he said. “Whether it’s the exploration of the Soul series, the atmosphere of Resident Evil, or the fight of the hack and slash game, we will blend them together. But the overall experience is still very coherent and doesn’t look broken.”

Ultimately, S-Game hopes to revive classic kung fu movements in its own way.The studio said its game design philosophy and principles bring together all elements—if one aspect fails, it will also drag down other parts of the game.

“We have deeper ideas and principles in game design,” Liang Qiwei said. “Without these, every element we draw from different types of games would appear isolated and fragmented. One is the golden age of reviving Chinese Kung Fu movies, from Bruce Lee in the 1970s to his works in the early 21st century, we want to rekindle people’s enthusiasm for Kung Fu movies. Two is for the game itself, we want to rediscover the golden experiences of the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 eras.”

Shadow Blade Zero is currently being developed for PC and PS5 platforms.Although the specific release date has not been announced yet, the studio may aim for the fall 2026 release window.The studio also previously revealed that it takes 20 to 30 hours for players to pass the game.
