Atlus's games are now known for their gorgeous UI, and the inspiration for "Metaphorical Fantasy" is especially inspired by a niche classic game 25 years ago.

Over the years, almost all Atlus' role-playing games have poured amazing design ingenuity into details such as upgrade interfaces, item lists, etc.

This is not difficult to understand: in Japanese RPG, players spend a lot of time watching the UI while browsing various menus or turning-based battles.Atlus realized very early that even in games like Persona or Real Goddess Reincarnation, the simple operation of pressing the button to view the status should be matched with pleasing artistic designs to bring visual enjoyment to players.

In an interview after GDC in 2025, Hiroji Ise, chief UI designer of "Metaphorical Fantasy", revealed that his inspiration comes from at least partly another fantasy-style PS2 role-playing game - "Seven Warriors Molmes Cavalry" 25 years ago.

"The game has a unique system: players need to rotate formations between the front, middle and rear rows each round," he said. "The strategic thinking about rotation timing is very attractive. Its UI has also been carefully designed and highly consistent with the game's worldview, which left a deep impression on me."
