In 2020, at the height of the epidemic, Guillaume Broche, like millions of people around the world, "work is boring and want to do something different." At that time, he worked at the French game giant Ubisoft and had his own project - a role-playing game inspired by his childhood favorite classic Japanese game "Final Fantasy".

This game is "Light and Shadow: Expedition Team No. 33", and five years later, it has become a hit.The game sold 1 million copies in just three days, and its soundtrack topped the Spotify popular songs rankings, and even won praise from French President Emmacro himself. But the most eye-catching thing is its production story - a random message on Reddit to recruit colleagues + great luck + an extraordinary way of game development.

"Light and Shadow: Expedition No. 33" is set in the fictional world Lumiere, which is surrounded by a huge single stone pillar with a glowing number on it.Every year, an entity called "Painted Mother" appears, decrementing the number by one, causing everyone of that age to disappear, and the game tells the story of a group of people trying to destroy this mysterious existence. It's a fascinating epic story setting, but the game's 19th-century French-style aesthetics and old-school turn-based combat also set it apart.

However, when Broche started, it was widely believed that players did not want such a game.

Five years ago, Broche began recruiting talent for the project, sending messages to potential colleagues on Reddit and online forums. One of the respondents was Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, who was quarantined at home in Australia at the time.

"I saw Broche's post on Reddit, and he was looking for actors who recorded the voiceover for Demo for free, and I thought to myself, 'I've never done this, it sounds cool', so I sent him a test."

Jennifer was initially selected as a major character in the early version of the game, but eventually turned into the team's lead screenwriter.

Broche eventually left Ubisoft and established Sandfall Interactive in Montpellier, France, to develop Expedition No. 33 full-time.

After receiving financial support from issuer Kepler Interactive, the core team expanded to about 30 people.

Many team members were discovered in non-traditional ways similar to Jennifer.Composer Lorien Testard — who had never been involved in video games before — was discovered through a post on the music sharing site Soundcloud.

"I call it the Broche effect. He's very good at finding cool people," Jennifer said. "Broche is more modest in attributeing his success to the pandemic - people looking for creative outlets - and "huge luck."

He said: "The story is always like this. I made a list of 15 people and thought to myself, 'Okay, maybe no one can be recruited. But every time the person who responds first always says, 'Okay, let's do it'."

Kepler's support has attracted the studio to actors including "Darkward" male lead Charlie Cox, "Lord of the Rings" famous actor Andy Serkins, and video game actors Jennifer England and Ben Starr.

While Sandfall does leverage the extra help of supporting studios, musicians and other experts, Jennifer and Broche said the core team ended up being “multiple jobs.”

"We all participate in different parts of our work, which may be beyond the scope of our traditional roles," Jennifer said.Jennifer said she is also responsible for translating the game into different languages.

"We have a great team, mostly junior staff, but they invested very heavily in the project and were talented somehow, and it all worked out, and I still found it incredible years later," Broche said.
