"Death Stranding 2: Above the Beach" is released this Thursday and is available on Sony's PS5 platform. Like the previous work, its cast is mainly composed of Western actors, including Norman Reidus, Leya Seidu and Ellie Fanning. However, there is indeed a Japanese actor in the main cast: Huna Xiri, who plays the role of Rainy.

IGN Japan interviewed Hideo Kojima and asked why he chose to let Kunashiri play the role, and why Kojima Studios rarely uses Japanese actors in the game despite its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

In response, Kojima explained: "We recorded in studios in Los Angeles with other actors, so if they don't have a native English level, there's a little bit of a problem. I've been looking for someone who can speak both Japanese and native English, but it's hard. Huna grew up in Australia and speaks English, and when I met her, I thought she was a good person, so we decided to work together."

Hideo Kojima continued that he hopes to enable more young Japanese actors in his game, but he also said there are technical difficulties in scanning them into the game model compared to older or western actors.

He said: "It is very difficult to make Asians look the same as themselves in the game. Especially for women and young people, their skin is incredibly smooth. Asians, not only Japanese, are known for their smooth and delicate skin, but this texture will appear like CG when presented in the game."

He further explained: "On the contrary, for older people with a lot of freckles, the details are easier to show. I have tried using Japanese actors before, but it is really hard to make them look like me in the game. But this time I used new technology and I'm quite satisfied with the final result. Well, I hope I can do better next time."

Hideo Kojima said he hopes to continue working with Japanese actors, and even suggested that one day he could set the game's background in Japan. To date, most of the games created by Hideo Kojima have been set outside of Japan.
