Developer Bohemia Interactive has announced the next expansion pack of DayZ, Badlands, which will be launched some time in 2026, with new desert environments in Nasdara and new variants of infected people adapting to the harsh survival rules of the desert.

According to Bohemia Interactive in its press release, Badlands will be added to the "largest official map in game history" with a 267 square kilometers area in the Nasdara Desert for players to explore. This desert is not just arid sand that can be seen at a glance, but also includes towns, ruins, oil fields, and rich environmental narrative elements that can be excavated in the post-war desert.

The desert also introduces some specific elements of survival, which means players need to always pay attention to their own state and stay away from the sun to stay cool and survive. As mentioned earlier, besides the conventional desert environment danger, there are more things to be wary of - the new variant of infected persons "distorted" by the desert.

Bohemia Interactive also added that the expansion will feature “player-driven narrative” where players can form factions and discover “forgotten secrets.”

"Badlands" trailer:

"Bohemian Interactive Vow breaks through the defined boundaries of ‘survival’ in the DayZ universe through DayZ Badlands. From scorched earth cities to quiet sand seas, Nasdara is a land shaped by war and reset by disasters, and is now waiting for a new story to be written in the sand."

This is in stark contrast to DayZ's previous major expansion, Frostline, which brings players into a cold winter rather than a desert.Hopefully we can get more information about this expansion soon, such as the exact release date (rather than the current release window next year) and have a clearer understanding of the experience you will face when you step into the desert.
