In a recent interview with Famitsu magazine, Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of Final Fantasy 14 (FF14), talked about his life and work as a game producer, the works that inspired him in the past, and his current sources of inspiration. One of the works left a very deep impression on him that he wanted to apply the experience he gained from it to Final Fantasy 14.

This work is "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX" jointly produced by Bandai Namco and Khara Studios, which is the latest animation work in the Gundam series. The animation is directed and written by industry veterans, including Kazuya Tsuruzu, the director of "The Special Her", the creator of "Evangelion", and the screenwriter of "The Girls' Revolution" Yoji Toro.

Yoshida praised the creators for their courage to adapt the original, although this may be risky of angering old fans.“However, the story’s influence goes beyond that,” he exclaimed."The younger generation who had never been exposed to the Gundam series began to wonder why this work caused such a big sensation and got into Gundam - I have witnessed this phenomenon throughout Japan. As a result, the older generation and the new generation of fans were able to gather together to discuss (and share their love for Gundam)."

He explained that although the animation has only 12 episodes, it was surprising that it could achieve this effect in such a short time.“It’s all possible because the creators are willing to listen to a lot of opinions from different angles while still sticking to it and showing their attitude: ‘We have no problem with that.’”

Yoshida admitted that watching the GQuuuuuuX animation inspired him and reminded him of the goal he set for FF14: to make it a "theme park" in the Final Fantasy series."I wanted to create a place where Final Fantasy fans, regardless of age, nationality or gender, can come together. That's why for over a decade, we've been trying to find a balance: both referencing elements of the past Final Fantasy game and introducing new content to FF14."

Yoshida admits that there is no only correct solution to this problem. But he said that witnessing the "break of Gundam GQuuuuuuX" made him realize that when integrating new and old elements, there are completely different ways of dealing with them, and completely different ways to break through boundaries.
