Vitas, a world-renowned outsourcing company founded in 2004, has recently been responsible for transplanting and developing a number of games, including "Metal Gear 3: Remake".Eoin O’ Grady, technical director of its subsidiary Black Shamrock (Grounded, Kambala Space Project 2, Outer World: Astros’ Choice), was interviewed by foreign media WCCF to discuss the Switch’s technical capabilities. He said any 60-frame Xbox Series S game can be easily ported to the Switch 2 platform.

WCCF: From a pure performance standpoint of consoles, do you agree that the Switch 2 is closer to the Xbox Series S than the PS4, making it easier for developers to port this generation of games to Switch 2?

Eoin O’ Grady said: “In terms of GPU, the Switch 2 has slightly worse performance than the Xbox Series S; this gap is more obvious in handheld mode. However, the Series S does not support technologies like DLSS, while the Switch 2 supports it. This makes the GPU performance of both consoles generally comparable.

In terms of CPU, there is a more obvious difference between the two hosts. The Switch 2 is closer to PS4 and the CPU performance is slightly stronger than the PS4.Since most games tend to rely more on GPU than CPU when optimized well, the impact of this difference depends largely on the specific game and its target frame rate.

Any game running at 60 frames on Series S can theoretically be easily ported to Switch 2.Similarly, games running at 30 frames on Series S and mainly GPU-restricted should also be ported smoothly. Some games with complex physical systems, animations, or other high CPU load elements may encounter more challenges when achieving 30 or 60 frames, or require additional optimization efforts.”

The technical director is generally optimistic about the Switch 2, even claiming that it is expected to surpass the 150 million units of previous consoles to become one of the best-selling gaming consoles in history.

He said: “Given the great success of the Switch, people have already had a pretty high sales expectation for the Switch 2. Nintendo has a large number of loyal fans, and the handheld market is booming – I’m referring to more than just smartphones. The first generation of Switch, along with Steam Deck and other high-quality handhelds, have contributed to the growth in this space. Players are increasingly eager to play 3A games anytime, anywhere, so I think the Switch 2 will outperform the first generation.”
