An electronic game composer and sound designer who had fraudulently applied for an epidemic loan has been sentenced to jail.

Peter Connelly from County Durham is known for his creations related to the Tomb Raider series. In 2020, he exaggerated his company's turnover and defrauded the second "rebound loan" of 37,500 pounds. According to regulations, the company could only obtain one such loan at that time.

A month ago, Connelly had legally obtained a £22,000 "rebound loan".

On Thursday, July 17, the 52-year-old man, who lives in Lambton Courtyard, Peterley Town, was sentenced to 16 months in prison and was disqualified from the company's directorship for six years.

David Snasdell, chief investigator of the Bankruptcy Authority, said:

“Peter Connelly blatantly disregards the provisions of the ‘Bounce Loan Program’, which aims to support SMEs during the pandemic.

Not only did Connelly defraud two of the company when it was limited to one loan, Connelly also deliberately exaggerated the company's turnover to obtain funds that exceeded its due amount.

The Bankruptcy Authority is the leading body in combating ‘rebound loan’ fraud, and we are always committed to bringing fraudsters who steal public funds during a state of emergency to justice.”

Connelly is the sole director of Peter Connelly Co., Ltd., which was established in June 2008 and was named Universal Sound Design Limited in November 2012, and its business is described as "recording and music publishing activities".

In May 2020, Connelly applied for a "rebound loan" for the first time and received £22,000, which complies with the plan's regulations.

However, a month later, in June 2020, he applied for a "bounceback loan" from another bank, claiming that his company's turnover in 2019 was £150,000.

Analysis by the Bankruptcy Authority showed that its actual turnover was only slightly more than £58,000, which means he had significantly exaggerated the turnover in his second filing.

Connelly also falsely stated that it was the only loan he applied for.

During the inquiry, Connelly told the Bankruptcy Administration that he had been given the opportunity to recreate the Tomb Raider soundtrack, adding that it was a major project with great potential and lucrative potential.

He said that in order to complete the project, he applied for a personal loan and sold his car.

But he said that after the outbreak, everything went to a standstill.

Peter Connelly Co., Ltd. entered liquidation proceedings in August 2021, when both loans were not repaid.

In June 2022, Connelly himself reached an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA)—a legally binding agreement that promises to pay bankrupt practitioners regularly to repay debts, which is still under implementation.
