As Rockstar develops Grand Theft Auto 6, the award-winning company still has one unanswered question: its never-announced PlayStation 3-exclusive game Agents, whose trademark was renewed multiple times before being finally abandoned in 2018.

Giving up does not mean that Rockstar has not invested in development. Recently, former Rockstar co-founder Dan Hauser was interviewed. He revealed that the team had conceived "about five different versions" of this spy thriller game, and finally concluded: "I don't think this setting will work."

"We spent a lot of effort developing multiple versions of an open-world spy game, but we never quite got it off the ground. Agent went through about five different iterations. My conclusion was that the very qualities that make a spy story great in a movie make it difficult to make a great game—unless I could come up with a completely new way of presenting it."

Although it was officially announced that the game would be set in the Cold War in the 1970s, Hauser revealed that this was only one version of the plan."There's also a version set in the modern day... We had so many different versions of this game and worked with so many teams." He added, "I've always questioned the feasibility of an open-world espionage game," which is particularly interesting because the game has never been officially declared an open-world genre.

It is now impossible to verify whether this will be a "Grand Theft Auto"-style open world, or whether it will be closer to "007: Dawn" developed by IO Interactive based on the James Bond series.Ultimately, the team may decide to focus its resources on more important projects, as it did with Bully 2.
