Deus Ex is one of those game series that explodes online whenever a new game is announced. It is reported that we almost received a new game - but Embracer allegedly canceled a new "Deus Ex" in 2024, when the game had not even entered the full development stage. The original "Deus Ex" paved the way for many excellent immersive simulation games and stealth shooters, and players are eager for more works in this world. From this point of view, a modern remake of this 2000 classic seems to be a sure money-spinner - and Aspyr, who is good at remaking classic old games, is the right person to do this. However, when "Deus Ex: Remastered" was announced in September last year, the response did not meet expectations-players generally did not rate it highly. Now, the art director of the original "Deus Ex" has also expressed his opinion. He is also not satisfied with this remake.

"Deus Ex: Remastered" is scheduled to be launched early next year. Aspyr has previously completed the update, porting and re-release of "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter", the early "Tomb Raider" series, and "The Legacy of Kane".This remastered version will optimize the original game through "redesigned lighting, dynamic shadows, water physics, particle effects, and fully updated textures" and will also add "new character models with smoother lip-sync animations and ragdoll physics."However, these changes cannot at all allow "Deus Ex" to keep up with the pace of the 2020s. It is difficult to give people the feeling of a "new interpretation". Instead, it has lost much of the charm of the original work.Ultimately, this remake's graphics fall into an awkward middle ground and don't seem to satisfy anyone.

初代艺术总监完全不看好《杀出重围:重制版》

Jerry O'Flaherty, the art director on the original Deus Ex, feels the same way.In an interview, he saw the trailer for the upcoming remake for the first time, and his reaction was telling.

"Oh, what the hell," he said, "Don't. There's no need to do this. Sorry, whoever's involved in this project. Oh my gosh, it's not necessary. If you really want to do it, fine, but why do it? Who am I to judge?"

During the interview, O'Flaherty also recalled his time participating in the development of the first-generation game at Ion Storm.“It was one of those rare projects that people who haven’t been there don’t understand — the right group of people coming together to inspire each other in a very unique way. Warren Spector is one of those great people. I love working with designers who have tons of ideas they want to explore in this direction and that, and have the right team around them to say, ‘This is a great idea. We can do this, this, and this first.’”

"Deus Ex: Remastered" will be released on February 5, 2026 (Thursday). If you think the graphics aren't as bad as most people say, you can pre-order it on Steam now.Or you can buy the first generation annual edition.
