Recently, PS5 system architect Mark Cerny talked about the upcoming major update for the PS5 Pro in 2026, which will replace the current PSSR stretching technology. This new technology is similar to Sony's own PSSR, but promises better results.

Earlier this year, Sony and AMD announced a collaboration to launch a project called "Project Amethyst", focusing on bringing the PS5 Pro the AMD FSR 4 version benchmarking Nvidia's DLSS technology.

In an interview with Tom’s Guide, Cerny called the upcoming new technology a "direct alternative to existing PSSR."

Cerny said he thought it would take years for this type of technology to mature, but thanks to Sony's close cooperation with AMD, they have jointly developed a significantly improved image stretching algorithm in just a few years, which is expected to be officially launched in 2026.

"This is not a shrinking version of that algorithm, what we will release on the PS5 Pro is a full version of super-resolution technology jointly developed with AMD."

Cerny also talked about Sony's long-term partnership with AMD.He said the two companies are now closer than they were when developing the PS5 and PS5 Pro.

AMD Representative Jack Huynh added: "Mark makes us stronger, we motivate each other and push each other."

Cerny emphasized step by step: “It’s not about creating some kind of proprietary technology, but really about driving the progress of the industry. We certainly want to use these technologies on our own consoles, but these technologies are also available for free to all AMD’s customers.”

The PS5 Pro will be available on November 7, 2024 and will be available for $700/£800.More than 50 games subsequently received image enhancement and performance improvement updates, but after the release, some players reported that in games such as "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor", "Silent Hill 2: Remake" and "Mind Killer 2", the PSSR stretching effect is not as good as the PS5 standard version, and the picture performance is backwards.
