Recently, Austrian non-profit organization Noyb (European Digital Rights Center) filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft, accusing Ubisoft of mandating the stand-alone game to remain connected and secretly collecting player privacy data.If the complaint is successful and the Austrian Data Protection Agency takes enforcement action, Ubisoft could be fined 92 million euros.

育碧被指控:单机游戏强制联网 还频繁收集隐私数据

"Ubisoft will force its users to connect to the Internet every time they start a stand-alone game. Even if the game does not have any online features, this allows Ubisoft to collect data on user gaming behavior, as well as when users start games, duration of games, and when to turn off games. Even if we ask why they are forced to connect, Ubisoft has not disclosed the reasons. Under Section 6(1) of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), random collection of user data seems to lack a valid legal basis."

“To further understand Ubisoft’s data collection and tracking practices, we submitted access requests under Article 15 of GDPR. Ubisoft responded to relevant information, such as our unique identifier, and information on when the game started, how long the game lasted, and when to exit the game. As a skilled person, we also checked the specific data sent to Ubisoft during the game. It was found that in just 10 minutes, the game established 150 connections with external servers. Recipients of personal data include Google, Amazon and US software company Datadog.”

"Electronic games are expensive, but this does not stop companies like Ubisoft from forcing their users to play stand-alone games online unnecessarily, just to make more profits by tracking user behavior. Ubisoft's behavior is obviously illegal and must be stopped."Ubisoft has not responded to this matter yet.
