Steam Machine pricing will be similar to PC, not console

In an interview with Linus Tech Tips at a press conference, a Valve spokesperson revealed that the pricing of Valve’s newly announced Steam Machine will be “similar to a PC, not a game console.”

That could mean Valve won't sacrifice production costs to lower consumer prices, as companies like PlayStation and Xbox have done in the past.

Currently, the PS5 retails for $500 to $550, the PS5 Pro retails for $750, and the Xbox Series X starts at $600.Both platform vendors have raised prices this year.

"They did give me a hint, though. While they expect it to be very competitively priced with PCs, it will be priced similarly to PCs, rather than having games subsidize the cost of the hardware like a traditional console.

They didn't say why, but I'd say part of the reason is to avoid hurting the interests of their potential partners in terms of Steam games and Steam software partners.Part of it was realizing that the Steam Machine was essentially a complete PC.

So even if a company buys 10,000 of these products, there's no guarantee that they'll sell a single game, so they really need to protect the sustainability of their business."
