A chatty NPC appears in Metroid Prime 4, causing some players to worry

A new preview of "Metroid Prime 4: Beyond" has just been released. This Nintendo Christmas blockbuster has yet to have an exclusive face-to-face meeting, and a worrying discovery revealed in the preview. At least in the game's opening area, steady bounty hunter Samus Alain isn't alone - she'll reportedly be accompanied by a very annoying Galactic Federation soldier named Miles Mackenzie.A new trailer also reveals that he's not the only companion in the game.

"Oh wow! Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. What a mess. You're all alone on the planet with no hope of survival. But you don't have to sit next to Phil in the cubicle anymore...so...that's a win?" According to a recent preview from IGN, this appears to be how Miles will introduce himself in Metroid Prime 4.Players of the Metroid series have long been accustomed to having quiet and thrilling mysterious exploration adventures on alien planets. The last thing most people want is for an NPC to keep chattering nonsense in their ears.

But it sounds like that’s exactly what Miles does, at least in the early game. He's full of awkward Marvel Cinematic Universe-style quips and also gives the most explicit tips, like telling you to attack armored enemies with missiles."Miles kept talking during the game and I couldn't believe it, so much so that I dug through the settings menu to see if I could turn down the volume," IGN's Logan Plant wrote. "I found only one option - completely mute all speech..."

This is too bad!To make matters worse, Miles isn't the only one in company.A new trailer released yesterday reveals more of the fellow soldiers.

The preview introduces three additional human characters that Samus will come into contact with, and they appear to be spread out across different areas of the Metroid Prime 4 world.Previews indicate that the game is centered around a central desert hub area and extends out into four main biomes, which strongly hints that Samus will be working with a stranded soldier in each different area.

"Like Samus, some Galactic Federation soldiers have been teleported to the planet Veuros," we learn in the new trailer. "Follow the distress call to help these soldiers, and occasionally fight alongside them. They can provide useful power-ups. Teamwork is key if you want to escape this planet alive."

Will these companions be as talkative and annoying as Miles? Hopefully not.But it's still a major red flag.

Andy Robinson of VGC was also critical of Metroid Prime 4's opening sequence, finding an escort mission involving Miles being particularly offensive."On their own, these mechanics are pretty uninteresting," he wrote, "but in a Metroid game, they're especially disappointing. What's meant to be a solid Prime-style opening sequence (albeit a predictable one) gets bogged down by a bunch of gameplay and narrative tropes, each of which undermines the core qualities that fans love about the series. Metroid is essentially a sci-fi horror genre, but so far, Beyond feels like Raiders of the Lost Ark—and not one of those classics."

Even if you are not a die-hard Metroid fan, you will be persuaded to quit by the chatty NPC.In "God of War: Ragnarok", Atreus always pops up unnecessary prompts during quiet moments. This was one of the most criticized points in the early days of the game. It was not improved until a patch added an option to reduce the frequency of prompts.Even if the lines aren't annoying, I'm tired of NPCs always talking to fill the time between battles.Just because nothing happens in the game doesn't mean that I, as a player, have nothing to do.

We'll know if Metroid Prime 4 is as disappointing in other parts of the game when it releases on December 4.If that's the case, hopefully Retro Studios is already working on adding an option to turn off Miles' mic via a patch.
