Ubisoft apologizes for Anno 117: Pax Romana AI graphics and promises to replace them

Anno 117: Pax Romana brings the series' classic city-building gameplay back to the setting of the ancient Roman Empire, but uses modern generative AI tools in the development process.Players have begun to rail against a particularly shoddy AI-generated image in the background of the loading screen.“This is so far removed from the high-quality background art and loading interface of Anno 1800,” one player wrote.Ubisoft told the media that the problematic image will be replaced in a subsequent patch.

The loading interface art that players complained about most showed a banquet scene in a Roman palace, with dozens of people walking, talking, or sitting around.A quick glance or two will reveal the weird inconsistencies and errors that are the hallmarks of AI-generated images: faces of some background characters are deformed or blurred, joints and torsos are misaligned, and there are messy lines.

"Anno 117: Pax Romana" is Ubisoft's first game to have an AI disclaimer on the Steam platform. The statement read: "The team uses AI tools to assist in the development of some in-game resources. The final presentation of all such content reflects the team's production level and creative vision." Players also shared other examples that reflect "the team's production level and creative vision," including an image of Romans discussing politics in the Senate without heads:

Ubisoft subsequently issued a statement regarding the banquet image:

"This image is a placeholder resource that accidentally flowed into the final version due to an oversight in the review process. The final revised image is attached and will replace the current version in the upcoming 1.3 patch. "Anno 117: Pax Romana" is our most ambitious "Anno" work to date, and we are committed to thisThe largest art team in the history of the series was formed. To meet the unique creative needs of the project, the team used AI tools for iteration, prototyping, and creative exploration.Every element that players experience in the final game reflects the team’s skills, artistic standards, and creative vision.”

Here are the newly replaced images:

Players feel that the new graphics are an improvement, but the negative impact of the widespread use of AI has not been eliminated.Even though the game development team (Ubisoft Mainz Studio) does not intend for any traces of AI generation to appear in the finished product, it is currently clear that at least part of the background art was produced using AI tools.People can't help but wonder: Which is human concept design, and which is rough machine-generated content?

This is a shame, because Anno 117: Pax Romana has received a lot of praise in other areas."For a series that has always been known for its beautiful art, it is disappointing to use AI dross as art material," one player wrote in a Steam review. "There are a lot of low-quality AI-generated images in the game that are obviously unpolished. I am not opposed to AI as a creative tool, but in a $90 (Gold Edition) game, it should never be the final product. Hire real artists."
