Valve’s newly announced Steam console not only poses a threat to traditional console manufacturers such as PlayStation and Xbox, but also has the potential to attract more users to Steam’s already huge ecosystem.

Still, many are concerned about its actual hardware performance, as it comes with 8GB of video memory and a GPU that's only as powerful as the RX 7400.Although the performance of the Steam console is worse than that of the Xbox Series S, it is generally considered to be inferior to the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Faced with this concern, an engineer from Valve said that about 70% of users on PC Steam have configurations that are even worse than the performance of Steam consoles. In a recent interview, Valve's Yazan Aldehayyat described how Valve determines the technical specifications of its upcoming hardware.

The engineer said Valve effectively used the Steam Hardware Survey to determine the most common PC configurations.According to this survey, PCs with 6-core CPUs and RTX 3060-level GPUs are the most popular configurations on the market.

However, older GPUs and CPUs are still quite popular. For example, 3.05% of gamers still use GTX 1650, and 1.9% of players rely on Intel integrated graphics (Iris Xe graphics). The performance of both graphics cards is far inferior to the AMD GPU (with 28 CU units, RDNA 3 architecture) equipped on the Steam console.

He said: "We refer to the Steam Hardware Survey. This survey provides us with a good benchmark for measuring the performance of users' home devices. Steam console performance is equal to or better than 70% of user devices."
